To get the best experience from your Dash Cam, we'd recommend using a Nextbase branded SD Card.
If you're unsure which one you should buy in order to prevent any recording failures, you can find it here: https://www.nextbase.com/en-gb/hub/which-sd-card-do-i-use-in-my-dash-cam/
SD Card Formatting. We recommend that you format an SD card to your camera after every use. This will ensure the SD card's storage space remains organized, and the camera can find the empty space. We also recommend dedicating SD card(s) to each camera to keep them properly formatted, and to only erase the images on the camera that uses the SD card. Your camera will take a few moments, and then you'll have a fresh SD card ready to go. With a Nikon camera, go to Menu Setup Format Memory Card. Select the card you want to format and then OK. After a few moments, you'll have a formatted SD card. If for any reason you're struggling to find the format card option, check out your camera. A) Plug the SD card into the SD card port b) When the drive appears, right click on the drive c) Select 'Format' (Windows) d) Untick 'Quick Format Box' e) Follow the instructions as per the pictures here. Please be aware that formatting the SD card will delete all the data on the card, so if you wish to keep any footage, please copy this across. Every camera's operation is different, but they all follow the same general structure. Put the card in the camera, turn it on and switch it into playback mode. Open the menu and navigate to the option that allows you to format the card. When you buy a new memory card, you should always format it in your camera before using it.
Regarding the recording lengths, the camera will record continuously in small segments (1,2, or 3 minutes). It will record these segments consecutively until the SD card is full. Then the oldest piece of footage will be deleted and the newest will be saved in it's place. This will continue looping and is called Continuous Overwriting. The Dash Cam does this automatically to allow for more footage to be recorded and the old, unnecessary footage to be deleted without manual intervention. However Protected footage is not overwritten in the same way. These can fill the card and reduce the quantity of normal footage saved on your SD card.
It is essential that you format your SD card every 2-3 weeks to delete the Protected filed and free up space on your memory card for new recordings.
You can re-format the card by two methods:
1. On the Dash Cam
a) Turn on the Dash Cam
b) Stop it recording by pressing the red circle in the bottom left hand corner of the dash cam's screen.
c) Open Settings, the icon in the top left.
d) Go into Setup
e) Scroll across and click 'Format'
f) Follow the instructions
2. On a Windows Computer
a) Plug the SD card into the SD card port
b) When the drive appears, right click on the drive
c) Select 'Format' (Windows)
d) Untick 'Quick Format Box'
e) Follow the instructions as per the pictures here.
Please be aware that formatting the SD card will delete all the data on the card, so if you wish to keep any footage, please copy this across before you start the formatting process.
3. On an Apple Mac Computer
a) Before you start, you'll need to mount the SD or micro SD card on your Mac. If you have a Mac with an SD card slot, use that. If not, you'll need an SD card adapter.
b) Download, Unzip and install the following program. This is a tool to format SD cards properly on a mac.
c) Ensure you select 'Overwrite Format' and NOT 'Quick format'.

1Preparations before formatting SD card
Before you start to format SD card, you should grasp the basic information about it.
What does formatting SD card mean?
SD card formatting is the process of preparing a flash device for data storage. It cleans the SD card by removing previously existing data and information on the card (low level formatting) and creating a new file system (high level formatting).
SD formatting is different from deleting file. When you use erasing or deleting function in the SD card, the actual image data remains on the memory card, but will be overwritten when new images are taken.
SD format on computer V.S. on camera
Memory card formatting can be realized through the camera or through a computer. Both the 2 ways can clean all files and free up more space for use in the camera. In the latter case, a memory card reader that connects to the computer is required.
Formatting a card with a computer is often faster, while in-camera formatting is generally recommended for obtaining a file system that is optimized for the particular camera it will be used with.
Back up SD card data before formatting
Formatting will destroy the files in the SD card. For avoiding any regret, you had better backup your SD card data firstly.
If your SD card content is unreadable or corrupted, then you can get the SD card recovery here.
2How to format an SD card on Window/Mac/Android/camera (non-protected)
If your SD card is not write-protected, then you can follow the common ways in this part to get the SD card format. Even if your SD card is unreadable, corrupted, or damaged, you can format it only if your SD card can be detected by computer. (SD card is not reading?)
How to format SD card on Windows 10/8/7
1Get a SD card reader to connect to your computer. Back to your Desktop View, open up 'Computer', and your SD card should be displayed in the 'Devices with Removable Storage' section. Right click to select 'format'.
2In the format window, you need to make the following settings:
File system: FAT32 for 32GB SD cards and EXFAT for 64GB SD cards.
Format options: Leave the 'Quick Format' checkbox unchecked for a thorough formatting, or check it if you prefer a quicker, but more superficial process.
Click 'Start' to format your SD card on Windows computer.
How to format SD card on Mac
1Connect the SD card to your Mac > Click on the magnifying glass in the top-right corner of your computer screen. Type 'disk utility' in the search box that opens, then click on the 'Disk Utility' Application that comes up.
